Building Culture with Purpose: The Invisory Culture Club Story
When Boy George’s “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” played in our first virtual meeting for Culture Club, it wasn’t just because we love ’80s music (though we do). It’s because we’re the Invisory Culture Club – and yes, that other Culture Club is our unofficial mascot. But while we might share a name with the iconic band, our mission runs deeper: building a workplace where every voice matters and every team member thrives.
From Whiteboard to Reality
During an Operations team offsite in Minnesota last June, our Chief of Operations, Doug Rosenbaum, posed a question: “What makes a great company culture?” What followed was a vibrant brainstorming session filling that whiteboard with ideas about.
What excellence in culture looks like, What current culture was for Invisory, most importantly, what Invisory’s culture could become.
The energy was infectious. I (Jillian McKenzie) stepped forward to transform these ideas into action, and the Invisory Culture Club was born.
Building the Foundation
Our first six months have been transformative. We developed a comprehensive charter that serves as our north star, with a mission statement that captures our essence: “Invisory’s culture is rooted in respect, inclusion, and collaboration, where every team member’s voice is valued, and diverse perspectives and backgrounds are celebrated. We believe that when people feel connected, supported, and appreciated, they thrive and bring their best selves to work.”
But a mission statement is just words without action. That’s why we launched multiple initiatives designed to strengthen different aspects of our culture.
Breaking Down Silos
Recognizing that departments naturally operated in isolation at times, especially in a distributed workforce, we introduced an innovative video news sharing program with the help of Alex Torres, Director of Digital Marketing. Instead of lengthy emails that might go unread, teams create engaging video updates about their projects and achievements to share with the team every month between monthly All Hands meetings. It became not just about information sharing, but about putting faces to names and creating connections across teams.
Recognition That’s Fun and Meaningful
Enter HeyTaco! Invisory was already great at recognizing each teammate’s unique contributions, but we made it even more engaging with this playful Slack-based kudos system, thanks to Reese Bernier, Director of Revenue Operations. Saying “great job” is just better with a virtual taco! Give a taco, receive a taco –the more tacos you give or receive, the more tacos you rack up for gift cards!
Remote Work That Feels Less Remote
In a distributed workforce, clear communication is crucial. Sienna Quirk, Chief Marketing Officer, formed a committee that included members of our CS team and Salesforce partner team to develop a comprehensive Slack etiquette guideline document, helpful for new hires (and all current Invisors!) curious about appropriate times to send a Slack message, as well as top tips for respectful communication. The Culture Club unanimously voted and implemented a camera-on policy for meetings. Video on is all about creating genuine human connections. When we can see each other’s facial expressions, nods, and reactions, work feels more collaborative and less isolated.
Making a Difference Together
Our Community Impact Initiative might be our proudest achievement. The brainchild of Rachel Konforti, Head of Partnership Strategy – Salesforce, every Invisory team member now has 16 paid hours annually for volunteer work, and we incorporate volunteering into our team offsites.
Already, we’ve seen impact – from our Salesforce Pod team sporting hairnets (very fashionable, we might add) while volunteering at the Denver Rescue Mission food bank, to our Customer Success team creating care packages for autism community support through Kynd.
Invisory Culture in Action
What makes these initiatives successful isn’t just their individual impact – it’s how they work together to create a cohesive culture. Our communication guidelines help remote teams feel connected, which makes volunteering together more meaningful and makes employee recognition more personal. It’s a virtuous cycle that strengthens our community, making our work more meaningful and more successful at Invisory.
Looking Forward
As we prepare to welcome our next cohort of Culture Club members in January, we’re excited about the fresh perspectives and new ideas they’ll bring. Culture Club is all about continuously evolving and improving, just like Invisory itself.
We’ve learned that great culture isn’t built overnight, and it’s not built by mandate. It’s built day by day, through intentional actions, meaningful initiatives, and most importantly, through the participation and enthusiasm of every team member. We are fortunate to be building off of an already strong cultural foundation at Invisory and not starting from scratch.
Whether we’re sharing virtual tacos, volunteering in our communities, or video-sharing our latest and greatest accomplishments with the company, we’re building something special at Invisory. As we continue to grow and evolve, one thing remains constant: our commitment to building a culture where every team member can make their greatest impact. Because, as the closing sentence of our mission states, when people feel connected, supported, and appreciated, they thrive and bring their best selves to work.
We’re looking forward to what 2025 will bring to Invisory’s Culture Club.
